What Mercury retrograde means
When Mercury is retrograde, the planet of the mind appears to backtrack — and astrologically, life tends to follow. Messages get crossed, plans wobble, old conversations resurface and technology fails at the worst moment. It is less a curse than a change of mode: the sky stops asking you to push forward and starts asking you to go back over what you have already started.
The real astronomy
Here is the part most horoscopes skip: no planet ever truly moves backward. Retrograde is an illusion of perspective. Earth and Mercury orbit the Sun at different speeds, so as one overtakes the other, Mercury appears to slow, pause and drift backward against the background stars for a while before moving on. Astra computes this apparent motion from a real ephemeris, the same way it computes everything else — so the reading below follows the genuine sky, never an invented one.
What to actually do
It is famously a time to re-do, not begin: review, revise, reread, reconnect and double-check. Back up your files, confirm the details twice, and give people — and yourself — a little more patience than usual.
The myth, honestly
The myth is that everything goes wrong and you should hide under the covers. It doesn’t, and you shouldn’t. Mercury retrograde is weather, not fate — it slightly raises the odds of mix-ups, nothing more. Plenty of good work and good conversations happen under it.
Mercury retrograde in your birth chart
Born with Mercury retrograde? You are in good company — it is common. It tends to mean a mind that turns inward first: you process before you speak, think in loops and revisions, and often understand things more deeply than the people who answered faster.
